CCTV installation for businesses in Cape Town
Cameras that produce footage you can actually use — positioned properly, recording reliably, and viewable from your phone wherever you are.
Most CCTV systems we are called to fix have the same three problems: the cameras point at the wrong things, the recording drive filled up months ago, and nobody can get the footage off the system when something finally happens. All three are avoidable at installation.
We install IP camera systems for offices, warehouses, retail and light industrial sites across Cape Town. IP cameras run over the same Cat6 cabling as the rest of your network and draw power over that cable, which means one cable per camera and no separate power supply at each position. The image quality is far better than the older analogue systems still sitting on many South African sites, and the footage is genuinely usable as evidence.
Camera placement is the part that decides whether the system is worth having. A camera covering a doorway at head height gives you a face. The same camera mounted high in a corner gives you the top of a cap. We plan positions around what you actually need to identify — faces at entrances, number plates at gates, stock movement at loading bays — rather than spreading cameras evenly around the building.
Scope
What a CCTV installation includes
- Site walk and camera plan showing what each camera covers and why it is positioned there.
- IP cameras selected per position — wide angle, varifocal, or number-plate capable at gates.
- NVR and storage sized for the retention period you need, not the smallest drive that fits.
- PoE switch so each camera runs on a single cable.
- Cat6 cabling to every camera position, installed to the same standard as our data cabling.
- Remote viewing configured on Android and iOS, and on desktop.
- Night performance check — we come back after dark to confirm the infrared coverage is genuinely usable.
- Footage export training so you can pull a clip for SAPS or your insurer without calling us.
| Camera type | IP, PoE powered |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 4 MP standard, 8 MP where detail matters |
| Recording | NVR with RAID option on larger sites |
| Retention | Commonly 14–30 days, storage sized to suit |
| Night vision | Infrared, range set per position |
| Remote view | Android, iOS and desktop |
| Cabling | Cat6 to each camera |
| Power | PoE from a single switch |
How the job runs
What happens, in order
Site walk
We walk the property with you and establish what each camera needs to achieve — identify a face, read a plate, monitor a process, or cover an approach.
Camera plan and quote
You get a plan showing each position and its field of view, with the quote broken down per camera so you can adjust the scope.
Cable and mount
Cat6 is run to each position and cameras are mounted. Runs are installed in trunking or conduit where they are exposed.
Configure and aim
The NVR is set up, retention is configured, and every camera is aimed and focused on site rather than left on factory defaults.
Night check and handover
We return after dark to verify infrared coverage, then set up remote viewing on your devices and show you how to export footage.
Worth knowing
CCTV and POPIA
Camera footage of identifiable people is personal information under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act. For a business running CCTV, that carries some practical obligations: visible signage telling people the area is monitored, a clear reason for recording, retention that is no longer than you need, and controlled access to the footage.
None of this is difficult, and none of it should stop you installing cameras. But it does affect how a system is set up — who has viewing access, how long recordings are kept, and whether cameras cover areas where staff have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as bathrooms and change rooms. We configure systems with these points in mind and flag anything in your camera plan that is likely to be a problem.
This is general information rather than legal advice. If your situation is complicated, particularly around monitoring staff, it is worth a conversation with a lawyer.
Common questions
Before you call
How many cameras does my business need?
Fewer than most quotes suggest, if they are positioned well. A small office typically needs coverage at each entrance plus the server or stock area. Spreading cameras evenly around a building usually wastes half of them.
Can I view the cameras on my phone?
Yes. We configure remote viewing on Android and iOS during installation and show you how to use it before we leave site.
How long is footage kept?
That depends on the storage installed and the number of cameras. Fourteen to thirty days is the usual target. We size the drive to your requirement rather than fitting whatever is cheapest.
Can you add cameras to my existing system?
Usually yes, if the existing system is IP based and the NVR has capacity. Older analogue systems can sometimes be extended, but at a certain point replacement gives a much better result for a similar spend.
Do the cameras work in load shedding?
Only if they are on backup power. We can put the NVR, switch and cameras on a small UPS or inverter so the system keeps recording through an outage — which is often exactly when you need it.
